Insight into the dynamics of heat and mass transfer in nanofluid flow with linear/nonlinear mixed convection, thermal radiation, and activation energy effects over the rotating disk

ABSTRACT

In this paper, we study linear and nonlinear mixed convection, activation energy, and heat radiation effects caused by nanoparticles. This study aims to improve the understanding of how nanofluids behave in the presence of rotating disks and develop more efficient and effective cooling technologies. The flow problem consisted of partial differential equations (PDE). It is challenging to calculate these equations as a result of these nonlinear PDEs. Consequently, we use appropriate similarities to transform them into ordinary differential equations (ODEs). The bvp4c Matlab built-in technique is then used to resolve these ODEs. The velocities, temperature, and concentration outcomes with the various factors are examined graphically. Additionally, tables are employed to analyze the skin friction and Nusselt number values. It is analyzed that increasing the linear and linear mixed convection parameters enhances the velocity profiles of nanofluid. Enhancements in heat are analyzed by increasing nonlinear thermal radiation and enhancement in concentration is examined by increasing activation energy. Furthermore, as the variables for thermophoresis and Brownian motion are increased, the Nusselt number falls. The heat transfer rate is 27.16% for [Formula: see text] and 39.28% for [Formula: see text]. Thus, the heat transfer rate is enhanced 12.12%. This study’s practical applications include improving the behavior of fluids and the transfer of heat in rotating frameworks, which may affect energy systems, heat exchangers, and cooling advances in technology.

Multimedia-based hormone therapy information program for patients with prostate cancer: the result of a randomized pilot study

ABSTRACT

Few studies have explored the feasibility and efficacy of a multimedia information intervention for patients with prostate cancer who are undergoing hormone therapy. Thus, the purpose of the study was to assess the feasibility, acceptability, and the preliminary results of a multimedia-based hormone therapy information program (HTIP) on positive thinking and quality of life (QOL; primary outcomes) as well as social support and self-efficacy (secondary outcomes) of patients with prostate cancer. Patients with prostate cancer who were receiving hormone therapy were recruited from hospitals. After completing the pre-test questionnaire, patients were randomly divided into the multimedia information group (MIG; n = 40) and the control group (CG; n = 40). Patients in the MIG received a multimedia-based HTIP once a week for 6 weeks. Data were collected at 8 and 12 weeks after the pre-test. Measurement variables included positive thinking, QOL, social support, self-efficacy, and satisfaction with the program. The recruitment rate and retention rate were calculated for assessment of feasibility. The study had a 96.3% retention rate, and patients in the MIG were satisfied with the program. Preliminary results showed that, compared with those in the CG, patients in the MIG tended to exhibit higher positive thinking, prostate cancer-specific QOL, and social support at 8 weeks and 12 weeks after pre-test; however, the effect did not reach a statistically significant level. A multimedia-based HTIP is considered feasible and acceptable in patients with prostate cancer who underwent hormone therapy. Further research with a larger sample size, patients with high homogeneity in early-stage disease and long-term follow-up is needed to assess the efficacy of the intervention program.Trial registration: ClinicalTrials.gov (NCT04693910); Registered 05/01/2021.

The effectiveness of malaria camps as part of the malaria control program in Odisha, India

ABSTRACT

Durgama Anchalare Malaria Nirakaran (DAMaN) is a multi-component malaria intervention for hard-to-reach villages in Odisha, India. The main component, malaria camps (MCs), consists of mass screening, treatment, education, and intensified vector control. We evaluated MC effectiveness using a quasi-experimental cluster-assigned stepped-wedge study with a pretest-posttest control group in 15 villages: six immediate (Arm A), six delayed (Arm B), and three previous interventions (Arm C). The primary outcome was PCR + Plasmodium infection prevalence. The time (i.e., baseline vs. follow-up 3) x study arm interaction term shows that there were statistically significant lower odds of PCR + Plasmodium infection in Arm A (AOR = 0.36, 95% CI = 0.17, 0.74) but not Arm C as compared to Arm B at the third follow-up. The cost per person ranged between US$3-8, the cost per tested US$4-9, and the cost per treated US$82-1,614, per camp round. These results suggest that the DAMaN intervention is a promising and financially feasible approach for malaria control.

Long-Range SECCM Enables High-Throughput Electrochemical Screening of High Entropy Alloy Electrocatalysts at Up-To-Industrial Current Densities

ABSTRACT

High-entropy alloys (HEAs), especially in the form of compositional complex solid solutions (CCSS), have gained attention in the field of electrocatalysis. However, exploring their vast composition space concerning their electrocatalytic properties imposes significant challenges. Scanning electrochemical cell microscopy (SECCM) offers high-speed electrochemical analysis on surface areas with a lateral resolution down to tens of nm. However, high-precision piezo positioners often used for the motion of the tip limit the area of SECCM scans to the motion range of the piezo positioners which is typically a few tens of microns. To bridge this experimental gap, the study proposes a long-range SECCM system with a rapid gas-exchange environmental cell for high-throughput electrochemical characterization of 100 mm diameter HEA thin-film material libraries (ML) obtained by combinatorial co-sputtering. Due to the gas-liquid interface at the positioned SECCM droplet on the sample, high-throughput evaluation under industrial current density conditions becomes feasible. This allows the direct correlation between electrocatalytic activity and material composition with high statistical reliability. The multidimensional data obtained accelerates materials discovery, development, and optimization.

THE STRUCTURE OF THE INCIDENCE OF ONCOHEMATOLOGICAL DISEASES IN ECOLOGICALLY DISADVANTAGED REGIONS OF THE DNIPROPETROVSK REGION FOR THE PERIOD 2006-2017

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: to conduct a comparative analysis of the incidence of malignant oncohematological diseases structure among the population of the 4 most ecologically disadvantaged cities of the Dnipropetrovsk region, taking into account the possible influence of various adverse environmental factors (radiation and chemical pollution of air, water and soil) for the period 2006-2017.

MATERIALS AND METHODS: 1948 cases of acute myeloblastic and lymphoblastic leukemia, chronic myeloid and lymphocytic leukemia in residents of 4 cities of the Dnipropetrovsk region were analyzed, taking into account the possible influence of adverse environmental factors (radiation, air pollution, etc.). We used clinical and hematological data per patient and statistic information on these diseasis incidence in the region.

RESULTS: An analysis of the oncohematological patients incidence structure, namely: acute lymphoblastic (C91.0) and myeloblastic leukemia (C92.0), chronic lymphocytic (C91.1) and myeloid (C92.1) leukemia, over 12 years in environmentally disadvantaged cities of Dnipropetrovsk region have been conducted. A comparative analysis of the incidence of these diseases among the population of 4 cities of the Dnipropetrovsk region was carried out, taking into account the possible influence of adverse environmental factors (radiation, air pollution, etc.). An excess of the incidence rates of the above-mentioned oncohematological diseases for the period 2006-2017 was revealed in the cities of Dnipro, Kryvyi Rih, Kamianske and Zhovti Vody, where environmental factors significantly affect the increase in morbidity due to pollution mainly by radioactive and chemical substances.

NEUROPHYSIOLOGICAL BASIS OF THE COMBINED EFFECTS OF ACUTE STRESS AND LOW DOSES OF IONIZING RADIATION ON HUMAN BRAIN

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: to study the clinical and neurophysiological features in the Chornobyl clean-up workers with a verified chronic cerebrovascular disease/cerebral small vessels disease (SVD) exposed to low doses of ionizing radiation (IR), employees of the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant (SSE ChNPP), who were exposed to the stress factor of a full-scale war as a result of being held captive by the Russian military at their workplaces, and individuals of the non-irradiated comparison group.Design, object and methods. A cross-sectional clinical study with parallel external control groups. We studied and carried out an expert statistical analysis of the clinical and neurophysiological characteristics of 62 male subjects, from which three examination groups were formed: 1) a randomized sample from the Clinical Epidemiological Register (CER) of the State Institution «National Research Center for Radiation Medicine of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine» (NRCRM) of 22 Chornobyl clean-up workers (‘Chornobyl liquidators’) in 1986-1990,examined during 2020-2021, aged 50-68 years at the time of examination (M ± SD: (58.1 ± 5.2) years) with a documented external radiation dose of 0.03-2.30 Sv; 2) 24 SSE ChNPP employees exposed to the stress factor impact of a full-scale war as a result of being held captive by the Russian military at their workplaces. The average age of the examined was (54.5 ± 5.8) years (range 46-71 years). 3) Comparison group – 16 non-exposed men with verified chronic cerebrovascular disease/cerebral small vessels disease (SVD). The average age of the examined was (57.8 ± 5.6) years (range 50-70 years).

RESULTS: Neurophysiological studies confirm the presence of the pronounced dysfunction of the cortico-limbic system of the left dominant hemisphere of the brain with special involvement of the hippocampus in the Chornobyl clean-up workers. In the SSE ChNPP group, for the first time, the disorders of cerebral neurodynamics were detected in the form of functional hypofrontality and hyperfunction of the cortico-limbic system with lateralization to the right hemisphere.

CONCLUSIONS: Today there exists a long-term thorough methodological and evidence base for a possible neurophysiological diagnosis and differential diagnosis of the combined cerebral effects of IR and psycho-emotional stress associated with the conditions of military conflicts. Neurophysiological technologies can be used in the objective professional and qualification selection of employees in a number of professions that require quick and responsible decision-making. Employees of SSE ChNPP need further medical and psychological support due to an increased risk of developing mental health disorders.

CHARACTERISTICS OF NON-RENAL NORMOCALCIEMIC HYPERPARATHYROIDISM IN THE CHORNOBYL NPP ACCIDENT SURVIVORS

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: to assess the hormonal and metabolic disorders in the Chernobyl nuclear power plant (ChNPP) accident survivors (AS), having got secondary normocalcemic non-renal hyperparathyroidism (HPT) in the late period upon exposure to ionizing radiation (IR).

MATERIALS AND METHODS: The routine clinical, anthropometric, instrumental (thyroid and parathyroid diagnosticultrasound), laboratory (biochemical, hormonal), statistical methods were applied. In both prospective (n = 48, control group n = 19) and retrospective studies the data of 2,234 subjects including 1,372 irradiated adults (862 non-irradiated persons in the control group) were evaluated. Clinical consequences of exposure to IR on the endocrine system were evaluated in ChNPP AS.

RESULTS: High prevalence of vitamin D lack or deficiency was established retrospectively in 81.8 % of the ChNPP AS and in 89.5 % of the control group subjects. In general, there was neither effect of exposure to IR on the vitamin D status in study subjects, nor any difference between the study groups. According to diagnostic ultrasound patterns the parathyroid hyperplasia was diagnosed in 629 cases (28.2 %). Among the ChNPP AS it was found in 32.7 % of cases (n = 450) vs. 20.7 % (p > 0.005) in the control group (a 1.6-fold difference). HPT diagnosed as serum parathyroid hormone content > 65 ng/ml was diagnosed in 123 cases (21.1 %) i.e. in almost every fifth person. Increased serum level of parathyroid hormone was found in the 94 ChNPP AS and in 25 persons of the comparison group. In other words, the frequency of HPT was 23.7 % among the AS being significantly more than in the comparison group (13.2 %, p < 0.005). Frequency of normocalcemic non-renal HPT was slightly different by years of observation with a trend to the year-by-year increase.

CONCLUSIONS: High prevalence of vitamin D lack or deficiency was established in the ChNPP AS, being however independent of exposure to IR. Frequency of parathyroid hyperplasia/adenoma was 1.6 times higher in the irradiated subjects than in persons of the control group. Annual increase in frequency of the non-renal normocalcemic HPT was also revealed reaching nowadays 23.7 % among the AS, which is significantly higher than in the comparison group.

Characteristics of gut bacterial microbiota of black soldier fly (Diptera: Stratiomyidae) larvae effected by typical antibiotics

ABSTRACT

As agents in an emerging technology, Hermetia illucens (Linnaeus, 1758) (Diptera: Stratiomyidae) larvae, black soldier fly, have shown exciting potential for degrading antibiotics in organic solid waste, a process for which gut microorganisms play an important role. This study investigated the characteristics of larval gut bacterial communities effected by typical antibiotics. Initially, antibiotics significantly reduced the diversity of gut bacterial species. After 8 days, diversity recovered to similar to that of the control group in the chlortetracycline, tylosin, and sulfamethoxazole groups. Proteobacteria, Firmicutes, and Actinobacteriota were the dominant phyla at the initial BSFL gut. However, after 4 days treatment, the proportion of Actinobacteriota significantly decreased, but Bacteroidota notably increased. During the conversion process, 18, 18, 17, 21, and 19 core genera were present in the chlortetracycline, sulfamethoxazole, tylosin, norfloxacin, and gentamicin groups, respectively. Pseudomonas, Actinomyces, Morganella, Providencia and Klebsiella might be the important genera with extraordinary resistance and degradation to antibiotics. Statistical analyses of COGs showed that antibiotics changed the microbial community functions of BSFL gut. Compared with the control group, (i) the chlortetracycline, sulfamethoxazole, and tylosin groups showed significant increase in the classification functions of transcription, RNA processing and modification,and so on, (ii) the norfloxacin and gentamicin groups showed significant increase in defense mechanisms and other functions. Note that we categorized the response mechanisms of these classification functions to antibiotics into resistance and degradation. This provides a new perspective to deeply understand the joint biodegradation behavior of antibiotics in environments, and serves as an important reference for further development and utilization of microorganisms-assisted larvae for efficient degradation of antibiotics.

Age-related alterations in the oscillatory dynamics serving verbal working memory processing

ABSTRACT

Working memory (WM) is a foundational cognitive function involving the temporary storage of information. Unfortunately, WM is also one of the most sensitive cognitive functions to the detrimental effects of aging. Expanding the field’s understanding of age-related WM changes is critical to advancing the development of strategies to mitigate age-related WM declines. In the current study, we investigated the neural mechanisms serving WM function in seventy-eight healthy aging adults (range: 20.2-65.2 years) using magnetoencephalography (MEG) and a Sternberg WM task with letter stimuli. Neural activity during the different phases of the WM task (i.e., encoding, maintenance, and retrieval) were imaged using a time-frequency resolved beamformer and whole-brain statistics were performed. We found stronger increases in theta activity and stronger decreases in alpha and beta activity (i.e., more negative relative to baseline) as a function of healthy aging. Specifically, age-related increases in theta activity were detected during the encoding period in the primary visual and left prefrontal cortices. Additionally, alpha and beta oscillations were stronger (i.e., more negative) during both encoding and maintenance in the left prefrontal cortex in older individuals. Finally, alpha and beta oscillations during the retrieval phase were stronger (i.e., more negative) in older participants within the prefrontal, parietal, and temporal cortices. Together, these results indicate that healthy aging strongly modulates the neural oscillatory dynamics serving WM function.

Primate social organization evolved from a flexible pair-living ancestor

ABSTRACT

Explaining the evolution of primate social organization has been fundamental to understand human sociality and social evolution more broadly. It has often been suggested that the ancestor of all primates was solitary and that other forms of social organization evolved later, with transitions being driven by various life history traits and ecological factors. However, recent research showed that many understudied primate species previously assumed to be solitary actually live in pairs, and intraspecific variation in social organization is common. We built a detailed database from primary field studies quantifying the number of social units expressing different social organizations in each population. We used Bayesian phylogenetic models to infer the probability of each social organization, conditional on several socioecological and life history predictors. Here, we show that when intraspecific variation is accounted for, the ancestral social organization of primates was inferred to be variable, with the most common social organization being pair-living but with approximately 10 to 20% of social units of the ancestral population deviating from this pattern by being solitary living. Body size and activity patterns had large effects on transitions between types of social organizations. As in other mammalian clades, pair-living is closely linked to small body size and likely more common in ancestral species. Our results challenge the assumption that ancestral primates were solitary and that pair-living evolved afterward emphasizing the importance of focusing on field data and accounting for intraspecific variation, providing a flexible statistical framework for doing so.
