C REACTIVE PROTEIN (CRP) “at first sight”. Standard post-operative trend in Gynecological surgery and a comparative analysis with white blood cells levels

Int J Gynaecol Obstet. 2022 Jun 24. doi: 10.1002/ijgo.14314. Online ahead of print.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: The lack of information about the normal trend of the CRP blood levels in the post-operative days in gynecological benign surgery led us to start our study. We investigate the impact of different surgical techniques on the CRP trend. We carried on a comparative analysis between CRP trend and White Blood Cells (WBC) trend in postoperative monitoring.

METHODS: All of 207 participants were surgical patients for benign gynaecological pathology. We analized CRP and WBC levels after surgery on the total amount of women and separately by approaches.

RESULTS: CRP mean log-scores show a typical behavior. Moreover, the Chi-Square test result underlines that the proportion of women who report this behavior is independent from the type of surgery they had been undergone. Logscore mean values of CPR differ between any groups and between any times. No difference in mean of amount of white cells between the second and the third day was found, as observed for CRP.

CONCLUSION: Our study produced a trend reference model in post-operative monitoring of benign gynecological patients. The comparative analysis between CRP trend and WBC trend in post-operative days provided us data demonstrating the superiority of CRP in post-surgical patient outcomes monitoring.
